PLANIUM Adopts WAIYS AI Platform for Plan Revisions

The WAIYS Plan Analysis Agent automatically detects changes between plan versions and makes their impact on construction projects visible faster.

Hamburg/Dresden – The multidisciplinary planning and engineering group PLANIUM is using the Plan Analysis Agent from German-Norwegian technology company WAIYS to review plan revisions.

The Plan Analysis Agent is part of the WAIYS platform. It automatically compares different versions of construction and planning documents, detects changes, and delivers them to project teams in a structured format. The solution was co-developed and deployed while delivering a project controlling engagement within the PLANIUM Group.

Plan changes are part of everyday life on nearly every construction project. Until now, new drawing versions often had to be reconciled manually against previous ones. Many projects still do not work with BIM systems. Particularly during execution planning on large projects with a high number of plan versions, this creates considerable review and coordination effort in construction planning and project controlling.

The Plan Analysis Agent automates large parts of this process. AI-assisted visual analysis detects changes between drawing revisions, identifies revision and annotation clouds, among other elements, and places the respective changes side by side in focused excerpts. Associated comments are automatically assigned to the detected changes. The solution also extracts structured information from technical drawings and plan documents and makes it available for further analysis during project execution.

Final quality review remains in the hands of experienced colleagues. The tool directs attention to the relevant areas and shows where plan versions or planning updates do not match and still need to be consolidated.

From Hours to Minutes

The structured compilation reduces analysis effort many times over. This prevents errors and gives project participants more time for the questions that require experience: code compliance, impact on costs and schedules, and the contractual assessment of planning changes.

"Errors and delays in complex planning processes do not occur because expertise is lacking, but because large volumes of information have to be reviewed and cross-checked within a short time. AI can relieve project teams here and also reduce the risk of overlooking relevant changes," said Marie Andrea Stenfeldt, CEO of WAIYS. "Our goal is not to automate planning decisions. We want to give professionals the information they need for those decisions, faster and in a traceable way."

AI for Planning Professionals

PLANIUM comprises seven specialized companies at eleven locations in Germany with around 350 employees in total. The group covers services from early-stage consulting through architecture and building services engineering to construction supervision and operations support. The group also includes Hamburg-based sh+ GmbH, which specializes in project management, project controlling, and real estate consulting.

"A plan revision is not just about establishing that something has changed. What matters is quickly identifying the relevant changes and being able to assess their impact on schedules, costs, and downstream planning processes. If AI takes over a large share of the manual comparison work, our specialists gain time for this important assessment," said Barbara Vagt, Managing Director of PLANIUM GmbH.

The deployment at PLANIUM is a promising pilot project. In addition to the joint further development of the plan review software, add-ons for further review processes are in development. Here, too, the goal is to reduce standard engineering processes through AI, creating room for analysis and strategic consulting.

Beyond comparing plan revisions, the solution can also incorporate planning law information on properties, such as types of use, zoning, or development restrictions. For this, it draws on official planning data in Germany and Norway.

Technically, the Plan Analysis Agent is not based on a single AI model. WAIYS combines classical graphical analysis methods with specialized AI agents that come into play where complex plan elements must be recognized reliably. Text, tables, and graphical information are first captured in structured form and then processed in context. Detected plan elements are matched across plan versions and presented in a structured overview – from the big picture down to the individual changed element. The AI models used are selected for each task and optimized for performance and cost.
